Israel Portrait of a Work in Progress
The Laurie M. Tisch Illumination Fund is supporting photographer Frederic Brenner's new project, Israel: Portrait of a Work In Progress. The Work in Progress project embeds internationally-known photographers, in Israel for 6-9 months allowing them to be immersed in place, to create a body of work that makes an artistic statement about the paradox, orthodoxy and dissonance found in a country claimed by Christians, Jews and Muslims as their own. The project will produce a body of photographic work that will travel to college campuses throughout the U.S. and Europe to stimulate thinking and dialogue about the nature of place and people. It is intended to open an exchange of ideas that goes beyond politics and stereotypes to a place of rich complexity and understanding that is essential to shaping the future of Israel and all other countries learning to marry the complex texture of multiple cultures, religions, ethnicities with the practical reality of vastly different people who must live side-by-side and interact every day.
